Gena & Mat’s Southern Maryland dive bar Engagement Session is one we’ll never forget! When this lovely couple met with us to talk about their wedding we instantly clicked. We loved their laid back vibe and fun personalities and we had a lot in common sharing the same hometown. During their consultation, they explained their story and told us they had met in a local bar through mutual friends. After contemplating a few ideas, we decided what better place to photograph their engagement then the very place that their journey started!
If you ever spent any time in Southern Maryland, it’s likely that you’ve had a beer (or a pitcher) in the Goldmine Saloon; whether it was when you eagerly turned 21, when you met up with your childhood friends during the holidays, or after post-graduation didn’t-find-a-job-and-living-with parents phase. You know the place! It is a REAL DEAL dive bar in every sense of the word. It’s a Waldorf, Maryland landmark. The building’s history can be traced to 1930, and the bar itself has been in business since the mid ’80s. Never would we have imagined that photography would bring us back here.
This shoot took a little more planning then a usual engagement session since it was going to be indoors, in a dark space, and we had to pack many techy items. Nonetheless, we really love the way it turned out! Since Gena and Mat frequent and enjoy the bar regularly playing pool and darts (Alie may have done the same in her early 20s), they had no trouble being comfortable for the cameras. We love the dramatic lighting and even though we had to use artificial lighting setups on the move, this couple had no problem being themselves with every situation we put them in. It was invigorating for us to be creative, and try something new. It was truly fun to work with them and we can’t wait for their wedding in upstate New York next year!
